iPhone photo library cleanup and storage guide
Organize your iPhone library by screenshots, videos, duplicates and month, and understand iCloud sync, Recently Deleted and photo permissions to lower the risk of deleting the wrong thing.
When your library is full, first decide whether you want to find photos or free up space. Sorting into albums helps you find things but does not shrink the originals; actually deleting affects your other devices if you use iCloud Photos. Back up first, then clean up within a clear scope.
01Check backups, iCloud and photo permissions first
With iCloud Photos on, deletions sync to every device on the same account, and iCloud sync is not a separate backup that keeps deleted files. Save the originals of anything important elsewhere, then check whether the cleanup app only has access to some of your photos, so that "can't see it" is not mistaken for "lost".
02Start with items that are easy to judge and take up space
Begin with screenshots and long videos you no longer need, then check duplicates. The Photos app's Duplicates album only lists sets the system has detected; an empty album does not mean there are none. Don't delete every look-alike photo when some have important differences.
03Go through what's left one month at a time
Set aside five to ten minutes and clean up a single month. Swipee's swipe left to delete, swipe right to keep suits going photo by photo; review the to-delete list before confirming the system deletion. Filing photos into albums and deleting them are different actions, and you don't have to throw away originals just to group them.
04Still no space after deleting: check Recently Deleted
Deleted photos usually stay in Recently Deleted for 30 days, and the storage figure can also update late. If you need space urgently, confirm your backup and the to-delete items first, then decide whether to delete permanently. Permanent deletion can't be undone, so don't treat this step as a casual cleanup.
Check before you finish
- A separate copy of the originals of important memories is saved.
- You know that iCloud Photos syncs deletions.
- Each batch of photos to delete has been checked one by one.
- You confirm the permanent deletion in Recently Deleted yourself.
