iPhone Home Screen widgets and photo layout guide

From adding a photo widget and editing albums to Lock Screen layouts and widgets that stop updating: set up a clean, useful iPhone Home Screen step by step.

Decide what you want to see on the Home Screen first, then pick widgets. A fixed photo suits one favorite memory, a slideshow suits an album, and the Lock Screen has to account for limited room. When a widget does not update, checking settings and permissions finds the cause faster than deleting and reinstalling again and again.

01Start with your first photo widget

Touch and hold an empty spot on the Home Screen, open the edit menu and add a widget, choose a size and place it. Button positions differ between iOS versions. After adding it, touch and hold the widget to edit its content; make one widget first and confirm the photo and layout before adding more.

02Arrange the Home Screen so things are easy to find

Keep the apps you use every day on the first page, and give photo and info widgets fixed places. Pick a shared color palette and a fitting crop, then adjust the background. A good-looking screen also has to be readable; don't let icons and widgets cover text or the subject of a photo.

03Set up the Home Screen and Lock Screen separately

Lock Screen widgets have their own sizes and functions, and they don't automatically match the Home Screen. Touch and hold the Lock Screen to customize it and choose from the available widgets. Showing a large photo on the Home Screen and short info on the Lock Screen reads more clearly.

04Not updating or wrong photo: troubleshoot in order

First check that the widget points to the right album or content, then open the app to sync the new settings and check photo permissions, and re-add the widget only if needed. iOS decides when widgets refresh, so they don't update every second; a short delay doesn't mean the app has crashed.

Check before you finish

  • The subject and info are still clear after the widget crops the photo.
  • The Home Screen and Lock Screen are each set up.
  • The album and photo permissions match what you want to show.
  • You checked the in-app settings before re-adding the widget.
